Hello Steve,
Post a Comment I read your “Blobjects” report, and would like to make a couple of comment. Not having attended I can’t say what direction the discussions went, but I think the current crop of industrial designers owe more to cartoons, and anime than to any sense of retro. There is more than one person in magazines, and other forms communications, that talk about the current crop of cars, for example, as being “retro”, but they are not. They look to me to come from two schools, one is the ‘80s and ‘90s school of Batman illustrated novels (?) and the other has no discernable name (maybe you could come up with one) when you take a blob, then put zillions of notches, holes, bumps, steps, slots, and other details because you have a deadline and can’t think of anything unique. The blob is eminently suitable for this sort of design. Although yesterday, as I was driving down 101 on my way to work I had a little flash, unfortunately not long enough to build a theory on, but amusing nonetheless. I was passes by one of the new “retro” Mustangs, and it seemed to me it looked like a 1971 Mustang that ate one too many Twinkies. Then it hit me; I look like a 1971 Tim who also ate one too many Twinkies. Maybe that’s the connection. Regards, Tim |
